Utah Poulty Show

So when we were at the county and state fair, everyone told us about this show, and said there would be a lot of silkies there. So we went this last weekend, it was a good time. There were some great looking silkies, it made me realize we have a long way to go with ours. Here is a picture of the winner.

Does this seem like a bad idea to anyone else? This was at the gate going into the show.

Here are some of the other silkies from the show.

State Fair

So we decided not to take Sugar to the state fair this year because we just didn't think she would like be stuck in a cage for so long. But we wished we would have. About the time the fair started she went broody, so she just sits in her coop all day long, and when we went to the fair, there was not one other silkie. We were so sad, that and the deep fried twinkie was the only reason I even went. Oh well, maybe next year.

Our friend from Clinton that we met at the Davis County Fair did have several birds at the fair and he won first place, so it was cool that someone we know won, even if it wasn't us.

Chunky's gone :(

So we lost one of our little chicks Monday. Chunky, our white one died. We came home from work on Monday and she was sick, and we just couldn't get her better. Casan definitely tried her hardest to nurse and love that little chick back to health, but she couldn't make it. Thanks to everyone who helped us out while we were trying. Kristie came over and brought us some supplies, and Uncle Jerry gave us good advice from Kansas. Thanks.

Class Champion -- 1st Place

So we finally have proof of what Casandra and I already knew. Sugar is one good looking chicken. She won 1st place in her division and was the class champion at the Davis County Fair. I know everybody thinks we are a bit overboard with our chickens as pets, but they are fun, and now we can make even more money when we sell their chicks...champion bloodlines. Next Stop Utah State Fair in September.

They're Back!!!

So you if you did not read the post on the family blog, here is the low down. We sold three of our first batch of chickens to some guy, knowing one was a rooster, but we had no idea about the others. Today he shows up out of the blue, no call, no email, just shows up at the door, says we gave him three roosters and can he trade two in for hens. What are we bed bath and beyond? So we did actually give him one of the hens we were going to sell. So now we have 2 roosters, it is exciting. Also, it looks like he is feeding them steroids, they are HUGE!!! They are way bigger than their moms which are a year older than they are. So here they are at about 4 months old...Sheldon and Big Bumble. The first 2 pictures are them when they were just a couple of days old.

Dirt Bath

So the chickens kept digging in Casandra's flowers to take their dirt baths. I joked with her that they did it there because the dirt and bark is nice and level and neat, and the place they normally do it is a big mess. So I took the rake out and smoothed out their dirt bath area and within a few minutes this is what we saw. All 5 chicks in there taking a bath, I didn't realize we had such high maintenance chickens...On second thought, yes I did.

Zorro is getting big

So this is Zorro, she is about 2 months old now and when we came home from California she had grown quite the hair do on top. This is all natural, I just picked her up and had Casan go get the camera.

Sad Day

So we had a sad day a couple weeks ago. We had to sell our rooster, and little Jerry. Our rooster Pepper was just too loud, and we didn't want to keep him stuck in the chicken coop all morning during the summer, so we sold him. He is living on a farm near thanksgiving point. It is sad not having him around, but we are happy that he can have a real farm life. We have also sold the last 3 chickens from our first batch of chicks we hatched. So we just have Sugar and Oreo, our two hens, and the five new little baby chicks.

Our chicks learning to take a dirt bath

The baby chicks think they are so big that they need to sit on the moms to keep them warm.
The rest are just some pics of the new chicks, they are a couple of weeks old now, lots of fun.

This is Oreo after a day in the rain, you would think they would go in the coop to get away from the rain, but nope.

The new chicks at play

Sleeping Chicks

So Casandra loves when the little ones sleep because they kind of look like little airplanes the way their wings kind of stick out on the side. The first picture is everyone's favorite Bumble, the second one is Sheldon sleeping.

#3 and #4 are here

So I went out last night to make sure everything was OK in the coop, and I saw an empty egg shell, so I did a little digging and found the jet black one. This morning the little black and yellow one was born. It is very cool it is dark black and bright yellow mix. When we put the chicks back in the coop after bringing them in to feed and play with them the moms, especially Jerry get all wound up and run to get the chicks. Well, when one gets up the others start taking the eggs of the first one that gets up, and it is total chaos from there.

Woo Hoo - New Chicks!

So we thought we would get chicks in the next few days, I was sure it wouldn't be until Monday or Tuesday, Casandra thought it would be today. So this morning I went and let Pepper out of the coop, then I opened up the big door to see how all the girls were doing. When all of a sudden underneath Suger I saw a little head poke out. Our new little chick hatched last night I think. Anyways, here are some pics. It is way smart, already eating and dinking on it's own, we didn't have to do anything.

Jerry doesn't like me around her eggs

The picture is of Jerry sitting on the eggs, but she usually only sits on them for 15 minutes a day, Sugar does it the rest of the time.
